Tips for coaches

SpeedFutbol coaching philosophy

  • SpeedFutbol was designed to provide a high intensity, non-stop, and fast paced game for the players. The game will naturally provide challenge for the players. We advise coaches to allow the game to be the teacher, and not to over coach or create additional pressure from the sidelines. As a coach, the priority is to create a positive and supportive environment for the players.

Roster management

  • The format is 4 v 4, including a sweeper-keeper.
  • Minimum of 6 and maximum of 8 players are the allowed roster sizes.
  • The game is cognitively and physically demanding, so maximizing your roster is encouraged in tournament play.

Positional play / formations

  • A couple of different formations are recommended.
  • Diamond: the sweeper-keeper (SK) operates at the base of the diamond.
  • T-shape: one central defensive player supports and protects the SK, and two attacking players provide both width and attacking depth.
  • The game demands that all four players on the pitch defend and attack collectively.

Use of the sweeper-keeper (SK)

  • The sweeper-keeper should be treated like an extra outfield player, who is allowed to use their hands in the SK area.
  • The SK should be connected to every team attack.
  • The SK should look to join teammates in the attacking half to create overloads and the chance to score 2-point goals.
  • 2-point goals are awarded when a goal is scored and all players on the scoring team are in the attacking half, including the SK.
  • We encourage all players to try the SK position over the course of a tournament. When used well, this position has a lot of influence on the game.

Substitution strategies

  • The game is continuous. Players should not rest on the field.
  • Substitutions are on the fly.
  • The only time you cannot substitute a player is when they are executing a QUICK START.
  • A typical shift length should be 90 to 120 seconds.
  • When possible, substitute players when you are on a fast attack.
  • Your substitution entry and exit gate is in front of your team bench, in your defensive half of the pitch.
  • With a squad of 8, pair players so one of the pair is on the pitch and the other is waiting to bring their partner off.

Game strategies to consider

  • Prioritize scoring 2-point goals.
  • Keep your team fresh, and keep the substitutions flowing.
  • All players must defend. Encourage every player to get goal side as quickly as possible when the opposition has the ball.
  • All 4 players on the pitch need to be actively involved in every attack. The SK should not hang back to protect the goal.
  • Take advantage of the quick start rule (within 4 seconds) to exploit fast attacks.
  • All quick starts can be executed with a pass, dribble, or shot.
